   Résumé
   Un jeune joueur professionnel de tennis, Chris, a choisi de se reconvertir en moniteur dans l'espérance d'avoir une vie plus confortable. Il donne des cours dans un club chic de Londres où il finit par nouer des relations amicales avec un riche jeune héritier, Tom, qui va tout de suite l'introduire dans sa famille. La sœur va immédiatement tomber amoureuse du jeune et beau moniteur de tennis, un mariage s'ensuit et le père va s'empresser de caser son nouveau gendre dans un poste important au sein d'une des sociétés qu'il possède. Tout va pour le mieux pour le jeune moniteur d'origine modeste: il a épousé un riche parti, a un bon job où il réussit très bien et semble définitivement à l'abri du besoin. Seulement le destin va lui jouer un mauvais tour: il va être irrésistiblement attiré par la fiancée de Tom, Nola, une volcanique actrice ratée qui est comme lui d'origine populaire, et américaine de surcroît. Elle devient sa maîtresse, rompt ses fiançailles avec Tom, et révèle à Chris au bout de quelques mois qu'elle est enceinte de lui. Or il n'est pas question pour ce dernier de renoncer à son riche mariage et à sa vie confortable.
